I have worked as a newspaper and magazine journalist, a college lecturer and as a swimming teacher (for a while juggling all three jobs part-time alongside bringing up my three children). My home in the middle of Warwickshire fields provides the perfect balance to my sometimes frantic working life.

What inspired you to write?

I have enjoyed creative writing since early schooldays. Herman's Stone was inspired by a family holiday on the wonderful island of Herm near Guernsey.

What are your top five writing and/or publishing tips for budding authors?

  1. enjoy your writing
  2. don't be discouraged by a few rejections
  3. read what you have written out loud
  4. use a plain font like Arial or Times Roman in 12pt
  5. Give yourself the space to immerse yourself in your writing whenever possible
