Kathryn Barker

Kathryn Barker A floristry tutor who holds the NDSF, (level 5) the highest qualification in floristry we can currently achieve in the UK. I have been teaching floristry since 1987 and have full time, part time, private courses. I am a peripatetic internal verifier and also a qualified External Verifier for City & Guilds. I also work freelance in shops whenever I am needed and do flowers for weddings and events.

What inspired you to write?

It was purely accidental! I had written a set of handouts for my students explaining the European principles of design for floristry in a very basic format and one day I took them to a tutor meeting and it was suggested that they should be in book format. And so the long road to publishing them started. As you all know, a simple handout does not easily make a book.

What genre do you write in?

Non- fiction - floristry

What books have you written?

Fresh Expressions – an introduction to the use of the European principles of design

Floral Experession

What is the address of your official web site?

none

Who are your favourite authors?

No preference

What are your top five writing and/or publishing tips for budding authors?

  1. re-read, re-read and re-read
  2. get others to check your work and give honest feedback
  3. be willing to pay for book layout and design, particularly in a non-fiction book. Good design sells
  4. don't publish a book without paying for an ISBN number. It's a vital expense
  5. join www.newwritersuk.co.uk the advice and friendship is invaluable.

Any final words of wisdom?

Hi My book was written for floristry students, tutors and basically anyone with an interest in contemporary floristry and the rules of placement behind the art. It is easy to read and understand and hopefully makes sense of the "Whys? Where's? and How's?" of it all. I hope you will try it and find it an invaluable part of your floristry library. Kathryn
