A History of Greatham

by
Peter Gripton

The present-day Parish of Greatham lies in the county of Hampshire, on either side of the old Farnham (Surrey) to Petersfield Turnpike. The ‘Domesday Book’ of 1086 recorded Greatham as being ‘Terra Regis’, a Latin term meaning ‘Land of the King’, indicating that this was once a Royal manor belonging to William the Conqueror himself.

A Day Above Stamford

by
John and Christine Nowell

‘Flying over Stamford has given John the opportunity to photograph this unique town from an entirely different perspective to that which is familiar to those on the ground. Seen through a car windscreen, much of Stamford is hidden and disguised. It is easy to miss the narrow medieval lanes and alleys that still exist alongside Victorian and Georgian terraces. The lives of past generations can be guessed at when their habitats are seen from the air.’
Lady Victoria Leatham, Burghley House, Stamford.

A Day Above Rutland

by
John and Christine Nowell

‘How many of us have longed as children to soar through the air looking down on our homes and gardens? It took me 60 years to realise this dream when I was taken up in nothing less than an RAF Harrier. How fortunate, then, that only a few months later this beautiful book of photographs was published enabling me to view at leisure the landscape of Rutland from the air. From the magnificence of Rutland Water to the homely layout of many villages, this book brings a new perspective to our knowledge of Rutland. '
Laurence Howard, Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland.

‘One brief encounter was enough to make me fall in love with the place’ John arranged for Sir Arthur to fly over Sri Lanka in a hot-air balloon and Sir Arthur describes this experience, ‘Floating over the verdant landscape of Sri Lanka is an experience that will stay with me forever. Now, in this book, John Nowell has captured the essence of such a flight in a visual extravaganza that proves the fact that I have known for 50 years - Sri Lanka is a land like no other’.

Now & Then - Rutland

by
Christine Nowell

The majority of the old photographs used in Now & Then - Rutland were taken by Charles Henton at the time when the Great War (1914-1918), was raging in Europe. Charles carefully noted the exact time when he took a particular photograph and was patient to include both young and old Rutlanders. Today, many of the scenes are completely unchanged, others modernised beyond recognition. The colourful photography in this book depicts changes that have taken place since the dawn of photography but more importantly, it shows that many of the aspects have not changed at all.

This beautiful book provides a permanant and lasting reminder of Dubai, past and present.’
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates Airline and Dubai Civil Aviation Authority,

Now & Then - Abu Dhabi

by
Christine Nowell

This book revolves around one man, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan who died in 2005. One of the opening pictures shows him with all 19 of his sons. With little formal education, his natural inquisitiveness enabled him to learn from everything and everyone around him. In 30 years, he supervised the material development of the UAE and Abu Dhabi but respected the environment by the planting of 30 million palm trees. This book presents excellent photography from the 5000 year-old, Um Al Nar tombs to the modern skyline today, interspersed with sweeping seascapes showing traditional dhow racing still popular today.

by
John Nowell

Bahrain has emerged in the latter half of the 20th century as a country of the new millennium. Its transformation has been dramatic. This book is a fascinating insight into a nation in continuous transition, a beautiful, historical photographic record and an inspiration for photographers in the years to come.

Now and Then - The Emirates

John Nowell

No where else on earth has been transformed so quickly, so dramatically, as the United Arab Emirates. Over the past 40 years, the newfound oil wealth has propelled this country, which became independent in 1971, from a sparsely populated collection of desert Sheikdoms into a vibrant modern country. ‘Now & Then - The Emirates’ is a fascinating collection of old and new photographs, many of which have never been seen or published before. The book is divided into 7 chapters, one for each individual Emirate with a foreword written by His Excellency, The British Ambassador, Anthony Harris, himself.

John and Robert Nowell

Sharjah’s transformation, in the latter half of the twentieth century, has been dramatic. With wise investment of the new revenue, Sharjah has rapidly developed into a modern, commercial city and a lively, bustling Emirate. Through the use of old photographs compared with modern ones in the same location, Now & Then – Sharjah illustrates the monumental and widespread change that has occurred within the emirate.

Cats of Katapola

by
Susan Watkin

I often visit the island of Amorgos in the Cyclades in Greece and have taken many photographs of cats. I took most of the photographs in the main port, Katapola. Amorgos is a very attractive island, and there are many reasons other than cats for visiting the island.
